What to expect

Welcome!

Are you thinking about visiting Trinity United Church?  Maybe you have never set foot in a church before or maybe you are a long-time church go-er looking for a new home.  Whatever your situation, here is what you can expect when you walk in the doors for the first time.

First, take a minute to browse around our site and get familiar with some of our programs and people.  We offer a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth and performing work in God's service.

Where are we?

Trinity is located at 3050 Rosemont Boulevard in Montreal, Quebec, near the corner of Rosemont and St-Michel.  Here is a map. There is usually ample parking on the street, or you can park in the parking lot of the school across the street.  The 197 bus stops at the door, and the 67 passes along St. Michel.

When should I arrive?

The service starts promptly at 11:00 AM, so you may want to arrive a few minutes early to meet some people, check out our facilities, and get comfortably seated.

What should I wear?

Like many churches, people come to Trinity in a wide variety of dress.  You will find people wearing suits and ties or fancy dresses, and you will also find people wearing jeans and a T-shirt.  The important part is that you come as you are!  Everyone is welcome!

Can my children come, too?

Absolutely!  We love children at Trinity and we have an active Sunday School for all ages.  Usually our children join us for the first part of the worship service, then leave for Sunday School.  At first, all ages gather together for song and prayer, then they separate into three classes for pre-school, elementary and high school/cégep ages.  We are blessed at Trinity with many caring, capable and responsible Sunday School teachers, usually two per class,  so your children will be well cared-for.  We encourage visiting children to join the other children when they leave, and someone will guide them on the way.  Parents are welcome to come and observe if they wish.  If your children would prefer to remain with you in church, that's fine too.

What should I expect at the worship service?

When you first walk in the doors, you'll probably see people busily milling about getting prepared for the service.  Don't be shy, just come on in and introduce yourself!  As you approach the sanctuary, you will be greeted with a warm smile and a handshake and given a hymnal and a bulletin.  The hymnal contains the music we sing during worship and the bulletin will tell you the order of the worship as well as important information and announcements.

Music

As you find your seat, you will probably hear the organ gently playing music for your enjoyment and reflection.  Music is a big part of our worship service and you will find that we mostly sing traditional hymns, though we are beginning to integrate some more contemporary praise songs.  If a hymn is to be sung while standing, it will be marked as such in your bulletin.

The Service will start when the choir processes in and the congregation sings a hymn.

Welcome and Announcements

One of the first things that happens in the service is a welcome from the minister or worship leader.  During this time, you may be asked to identify yourself as a first time visitor by standing or raising your hand.  Don't be afraid!  We do this to be friendly and to make sure people can welcome you properly, not to single you out as a stranger!  In fact, we're so happy to see you, that we will sing a song to you that was composed by our choir director/organist, Julia Budd:

Welcome to Trinity, your church and mine!
Loving community, branch of the vine.
We gather together no longer alone, at Trinity you'll find a home.
Welcome to faith, welcome to love, one in the spirit serving our God.
Calling for justice, calling for peace in our world.
One is the body, many the parts,
Move in us, Jesus, Lord of our hearts,
Welcome to you, welcome to me, on a journey of faith,
United here at Trinity!

Scriptures

As Christians, the foundation of our belief system is the Bible, and so it is no surprise that readings from the Bible are featured prominently in the service.  These are usually read and put into context just before the sermon.  Sometimes the scriptures are printed in your bulletin, and if they are not, you are invited to read along in the Bible in the pew.

The Sermon

The sermon (or "message") is delivered by the minister and is a relevant, reflective, and thought-provoking message that helps those who hear it to grow spiritually, to learn, and to heal.

Offering

Since this is your first time at Trinity, you are a guest in our home.  Therefore, please do not feel obligated to contribute to our offering.  This is a time in the service when those who consider Trinity their church home make financial donations to support the ministry of the church.

Communion

Communion is when we share bread and juice that represent the body and blood that Jesus Christ shed for us for the forgiveness of our sins.  We are all sinners, but by the grace of God we are forgiven, and this holy time reminds us of that.  Trinity serves communion about every six weeks or so.

Prayer

Prayer is also a significant part of church life.  In addition to personal prayers, we pray together the Lord's Prayer.  Don't worry if you don't know it, because it's printed in the hymnal, too!

Benediction

The benediction, which comes from the Latin "blessing to glorify God", indicates the end of the service.  The minister will give a blessing to the congregation and encourage them to do God's work outside the walls of the church building.

What happens after the service?

The service is over when the choir processes out.  The organ will continue to play for a few minutes and you are welcome to stay and listen.  Or, you may begin to chat with those around you or head to the room between the sanctuary and the main doors (called the "Narthex") and have coffee and cookies.

On your way out, please be sure to sign our guestbook so that we can follow up with you during the week.

What if I don't share your beliefs?  Am I still welcome?

Absolutely!   In fact, you will find a variety of faith beliefs at Trinity and everyone is welcome.

What if I have other questions?

Please use the form on our contact page to send us an e-mail, or call us, or write us a letter.  We'll be happy to answer any questions you have about life at Trinity United Church.
