Rev. Read blesses Murray's parrot

Trinity’s minister, Rev. Read Sherman, loves to share God’s love through songs and laughter. His boyish face and easy smile make services at Trinity a joy to attend. Whether Read is dressing up in funny costumes or has something tucked away behind the pulpit, you can be sure he’s up to something fun. 

Rev. Read Sherman is a gentle and compassionate man with a great big heart, easy smile, and ears made for listening. Say hello to Read yourself!

Dolton is our new caretaker, effective 2024 August 1.  He ensures our building is clean throughout the week.

Trinity is truly blessed with the musical talents of Julia Budd! Not only is she the organist and choir director, but she also makes the musical arrangements for all of instruments we have at Trinity and plays a few instruments herself!

Our Council

Meet Trinity’s Council. The Council sets the big-picture vision for our church and manages our day-to-day affairs. Trinity’s minister sits on the Council, along with seven other elected members of our congregation.

Provides spiritual leadership to the Council.

Provides extra support for the Members of Council and helps in various areas, where needed.

Provides vision, leadership, and direction to the Trinity Council.

Beverley Bridgman

Director, Finance

Responsible for the short and long term financial planning. Directs the treasurer as well as the ministry leaders for Buildings & Grounds and Fund Development.

Veronica Heffernan

Director, Spiritual Affairs and Council Secretary

Oversees the spiritual life of our congregation by directing and coordinating the ministry leaders of Christian Development, Congregational Life, Membership & Pastoral Care, Mission & Outreach, and Worship.

Our Vision Statement

Inviting All to Share and Grow in God’s Love…

Inviting: to reach out into our community and to invite people to be transformed in God’s love.

All: Trinity welcomes people from all gender identities, languages, cultures, ages, and spiritual backgrounds.

Share: At Trinity, we share our resources with each other and our community. We share our  joys, our concerns, and our triumphs in this loving, supportive community.

Grow: At Trinity, kids and adults alike are looking to grow in our faith, and our ability to be the best Christians we can be. 

In God’s Love: This last statement encompasses all of the things we do at Trinity. “Why are we inviting others?” “Why are we sharing and growing?”. It is because of God’s love.

…  : The three ellipsis remind us that our growth and our sharing is a continuous process that is constantly evolving and changing. Our vision, therefore, is one of action. 

Our Mission Statement

Trinity United Church is a member of the United Church of Canada. We are a small, friendly, Christian community who are called together by Jesus Christ to gather to worship, celebrate God, and to live out our faith in our relationships, our families, and workplaces. We are caring human beings, actively sharing fellowship and spirituality. We are concerned with the global community and seeking to find our way in troubled times.

Following the example of Jesus Christ we are called to:

  • Become the people God wants us to be.
  • Reach out.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Live in harmony with God's creation.
  • Commit to better understand today's needs and react responsibly to them.

History

Trinity United Church has a long history of transformation since the origins of our congregation in 1862! History buffs, here’s your chance to read about the evolution of Trinity.

Rosemont Presbyterian Church, later called Rosemount First United. This is our "old building"

1862

Some members of Erskine Presbyterian church downtown, who lived in the area we now know as Rosemount, formed the Petite Côte Mission, originally as a Sunday School.

1876

Taylor Presbyterian Church was formed. 

1880

Taylor Presbyterian built a new church on Papineau Street.

1882

Evening services were being held at the Petite Côte Mission.

1900

In the early 1900s the Hochelaga Methodist congregation worshipped in a little red brick building on Marlborough Street.

1905

Rosemount Methodist Church was founded around 1905, meeting in private homes at first.

1910

The Petite Côte congregation moved into the assembly hall of Rosemount Public School (now Nesbitt School). Two years later, Rosemount Methodist built a church on 4th Avenue.

1912

The Petite Côte congregation constructed a building to serve as a lecture hall, recreational centre as well as a church. That building, that we now refer to as Trinity’s “old building,” was called Rosemount Presbyterian Church.

1914

The Hochelaga Methodist congregation built a new church on Pie IX Boulevard and chose the name Trinity Methodist Church.

1925

Methodist, Congregational and most Presbyterian churches in Canada joined together to form the United Church of Canada. With the formation of the United Church, Rosemount Presbyterian became Rosemount First United Church, Rosemount Methodist became Rosemount Central United Church and Trinity Methodist became Trinity United Church. In that same year, Taylor Presbyterian joined with East End Methodist to become Taylor-East End United Church.

1926

Rosemount Central built a new church on 4th Avenue.

1927

Trinity (Pie IX) dedicated a new sanctuary.

1929

Presbyterians, who had decided not to join the United Church of Canada, built Kydd Memorial Presbyterian Church on Rosemount Blvd.

1932

Zion United joined Taylor-East End United. Two years later, Taylor-East End & Zion United changed its name to St. Stephen’s United Church.

1956

Mountrose United Church was formed with services held in Mountrose School.

1959

St. Stephen’s United and Rosemount Central United formed a pastoral charge together. During that same year, Rosemount First United built a new sanctuary.

1960

Rosemount First United’s new sanctuary was dedicated on February 13, 1960. This is what Trinity still calls our “new building”!

1962

St. Stephen’s United and Rosemount Central United amalgamated, at first voting for the name St. Stephen’s Rosemount, but a year later, adopting the name Mount Stephen United Church.

1964

Mount Stephen United and Mountrose United amalgamated

1970

Rosemount First United Church, Trinity United Church and Mount Stephen United Church amalgamated into one congregation, using the building of one of the churches, the name of another and the minister of the third. Trinity United Church as we know it is born!

2009

Trinity United Church and Anjou United Church formed the Trinity-Anjou Pastoral Charge and share a minister.

2012

St. George’s United amalgamated with Trinity United on June 30, 2012. The amalgamation allows Trinity United Church to continue to innovate and provide a Christian experience for people living in the East End of Montreal through the St. George’s Legacy Fund.
